ECZ doubts conducting Mobile Voter Registration

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) will not be able to conduct its scheduled 14 days mobile voter registration this month if it does not receive funding by tomorrow the 5th of February.

The ECZ has however made an assurance that irrespective of whether this happens or not voter registration at civic centers in all Districts will continue as planned until the 29th of February.

Chairperson Esau Chulu has also disclosed that in line with article 52 (4) and (5) of the amended republican constitution, the ECZ has revised the nomination timelines for this year’s general elections.

Justice Chulu says the nomination dates for presidential candidates is now 30th May to 3rd June while the nomination dates for mayoral and council chairpersons has been set for 30th May.

He notes that candidates wanting to contest National Assembly and Local government elections will file their nomination papers on the 31st of May.

Justice Chulu was speaking this morning at a stakeholders meeting held in Lusaka.

And Justice Chulu has also disclosed that the commission is currently liaising with the Ministry of Justice to hold a referendum on Bill of Rights alongside the August 11th general elections.
