The Football Association of Zambia (Faz) football season kicks off this month starting with the Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu Charity Shield semi finals on February 20 and the final on March 5.

The Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu Charity Shield, whose proceeds are donated by the Republican President to a charity of his choice on behalf of the Football Association of Zambia, marks the start of the Zambian football season.

The development was confirmed to fazfootball.com on Wednesday by Faz Communications Manager Nkweto Tembwe.

The 2016 Charity Shield semi finals will feature 2015 MTN Faz Super League champions Zesco United, Barclays Cup winners Green Buffaloes, league runners-up Zanaco and Power Dynamos.

The winners will meet on March 5. Zesco United defeated Power Dynamos to win the 2015 edition of the Charity Shield.

“The Football Association of Zambia 2016 Super league season will kick off on March 12, with the Charity Shield final taking place a week earlier on March 5,” Tembwe said.

“We are glad to inform you that the super league will kick off in March on the 12th, while Divisions One, Two and Three will return to action on April 3, 2016. The women’s league will kickoff on the 7th of May.”

Tembwe stated that the 2016 football season will see eighteen teams competing in the MTN Faz Super League and Division One divided into four zones of sixteen teams each.

“The 2016 football league season will commence against a background of a new league structure that has seen division one being divided into four zones and the super league having increased to eighteen teams from the previous sixteen.

“In view of the restructured league, only two teams instead of four were demoted from the the Super League last year. However starting this year four will be demoted as was the case before. Winners of each of the four zones four will be promoted to the super league,” he said.

The eighteen teams which will play in the MTN Faz Super League for 2016 are Forest Rangers, Green Buffaloes, Green Eagles, Kabwe Warriors, Lumwana Radiants, Lusaka Dynamos, Lusaka Tigers, Mufulira Blackpool, Mufulira Wanderers, Nakambala Leopards, Napsa Stars, Nchanga Rangers, Nkana, Nkwazi, Power Dynamos, Red Arrows, Zanaco and Zesco United.
