Govt unhappy with share of construction works for local contractors

Government says it is unacceptable that the proportion of construction works being undertaken in the Country by local contractors is less than 10 percent in monetary terms.

Works and Supply Minister, Yamfwa Mukanga says this is notwithstanding the fact that local contractors constitute 95 percent of the total registered constructors in the Country.

Mr. Mukanga says government wYamfwaants this scenario to be reversed.

He says this can be done by ensuring that local contractors are equipped with all the necessary requisites for the Construction industry.

Mr. Mukanga was speaking this morning in Lusaka during the launch of the National Council for Construction (NCC) manuals for Continuing Professional Development (CDP) meant to improve the performance of Zambia’s construction sector.

Speaking earlier, NCC Executive Director Charles Mushota expressed delight that the launch of the CDP manuals has come at a time when the council is about to commence provincial trainings.

Mr. Mushota says the manuals will be useful to NCC as they target to train 500 contractors across the country through provincial workshops.
