Opposition issues communiqué ahead of August 11th polls

Some opposition political party leaders have signed a communiqué describing an electoral environment their parties want to see prior the August 11th general elections.

The opposition leaders that signed the communiqué include UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema, MMD president Nevers Mumba, FDD leader Edith Nawakwi, Rainbow Party President Wynter Kabimba, PP leader Mike Mulongoti and APC leader Nason Msoni.

Rainbow party leader Wynter Kabimba who read the communiqué on behalf of other opposition leaders disclosed that opposition political parties have pledged to fight against all forms of public resource abuse by the ruling PF.

Mr. Kabimba says opposition leaders are demanding for the timely invitation and early arrival of international and election observers and encouragement of local monitors to play their rightful role in safeguarding the integrity of the vote and ensure that the will of the people prevails in this year’s polls.

He says opposition leaders have further observed the need for the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to consider funding polling agents accredited by political parties.

Mr. Kabimba has told a media briefing held in Lusaka today that the opposition is additionally demanding a media code of conduct.

He says the opposition leaders have since committed themselves to issue based campaigns devoid of personal attacks.

And the opposition Rainbow party Leader has pledged to give his last dollar in his pocket if President Lungu wins this year’s elections.
