The Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PROTUZ) says the drop in the Grade nine pass rate more especially for Lusaka should send a signal that all is not well in the education sector.

PROTUZ Lusaka Province Chairman Nelson Mwale says this is a wakeup call for both teachers and parents to ensure that pupils do the correct thing if they are to advance in their education.

He says parents should understand that not all children who leave their homes on the pretext of going to school end up in schools, stating that this is also contributing to the poor performance of pupils during examinations.

Mr. Mwale says the teacher union is concerned that Lusaka province which usually records best results, has this time around performed worst.

He has since called for inquiry to establish cause of this poor performance by pupils.

Mr. Mwale adds that findings of the inquiry should be shared with stakeholders so that they see how best this can be addressed for better performance of pupils in future.
