President Edgar Lungu has implored traditional leaders in Eastern Province to help promote peace and unity ahead of this year’s general elections.

Speaking when he met Senior Chiefs Luwembe, Chief Ndake, Chief Nyalugwe and Chieftainess Mwape in Nyimba District this afternoon, President Lungu says chiefs are key in promoting peace.

President Lungu says Chiefs should avoid engaging in politics of tribalism but rather promote the politics of nationalism.

And the Head of State says he is in the district to assess which areas are likely to be hit with hunger, so that government can help in providing food to the needy.

He has appealed to the chiefs to sensitize their subjects on the looming food shortage owing to the poor rainfall.

And speaking on behalf of the chiefs, Senior Chief Luwembe has thanked the president for visiting them saying it has been long overdue.

And earlier when he addressed Luangwa residents, President Lungu directed Zambia Cooperative Federation Executive Director James Chirwa to set up solar-powered milling plants in Luangwa District that will help reduce mealie-meal prices.

President Lungu says he wants to stabilize the price of mealie-meal and to make the staple food affordable for everyone.

Meanwhile, the head of State has challenged the Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) to provide safe drinking water to it customers saying Government had mandated it to provide safe and clean water to the people to avoid outbreaks of waterborne diseases in the district.
