ZCTU praises govt

ZCTU Secretary General Cosmas Mukuka

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says government has proved to be a good employer and is leading by example when it comes to ending Casualization.

Recently, a law was passed to end Casualization and unjustified termination of contracts.

ZCTU Secretary General Cosmas Mukuka explains that what is happening now is that when one enters the public service, they are given six months probation and then confirmed and becomes a permanent employee unlike before when someone would work for years without being confirmed.

Mr. Mukuka says the problem is with quasi government institutions citing that they have done very badly when it comes to employing workers on permanent.

He however adds that they are comforted with the new law on ending Casualization has such institutions have no option but to comply with the law by ensuring that those doing jobs of a permanent nature are put on permanent.

Mr. Mukuka further states that he is hopeful that institutions have started implementing the law on Casualization to avoid being found wanting stressing that this might disturb their operations thus the need to comply with the law.
