The Press Association of Zambia (PAZA) has urged the media to help promote peace in the country in the run up to August 11 elections.

PAZA Executive Secretary Patson Phiri says the media should guard against being used as a medium for the issuance of reckless statements with the potential to spark violence and civil strife.

He says some political parties and their followers will during this period try to infiltrate the ranks of the media and try to influence media houses to their benefit.

Mr. Phiri states that the country is not immune to conflict, hence the need to guard against reckless media statements.

He has since urged the media houses to put the peace and stability of the country above any other consideration in the discharge of their duties.

Mr. Phiri also calls for professionalism and fairness in the manner the media carries out its work.

He implored journalists to be guided by the ethics of the profession and avoid acts that would dent the image of the profession.
