The singer insisted there are no hard feelings after the 23 year old quit the group to go solo last year.
He added he thinks Zayn “is great” and would be more than happy to welcome him back when the boys regroup following their hiatus.
When asked if he would consider letting Zayn into the band again, Liam told TMZ cameramen: “Of course, I love Zayn – he’s great!”
Although Liam, 22, doesn’t think it will happen anytime soon.
He added: “Zayn’s just doing his own thing.”
Pressed on whether the group would find a replacement for Zayn if he never returns, Liam quickly shot down the idea.He said: “There’s enough people, we don’t need any more.”
The heartthrob also put to rest rumours that 1D have split for good after announcing their hiatus.
He assured fans: “No, no, no, no, no … We’ve just been nominated for two BRITs!”
Liam’s kind words come just weeks after Zayn appeared to make a dig at his former bandmates – which also include Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles and Niall Horan – for not staying in touch.
He told Billboard magazine: “I had every intention of remaining friends with everybody, but I guess certain phone numbers have changed and I haven’t received calls from a lot of people.”
