ACC records reduction in reports of suspected corruption

The Anti Corruption Commission says it received a total of 1,645 reports of suspected corruption in 2015, showing a decrease of 600 reports from the 2,245 received in 2014.

ACC public relations Manager Timothy Moono has told a 2015 end year media briefing that this reduction demonstrates intensified anti-corruption efforts where the public have been empowered with knowledge on what constitutes corruption.

He says of out oMoono ACCf the reports received in 2015, a total of 1,163 were non corruption related as compared to 1,530 in 2014.

Mr. Moono says advice was subsequently provided to all those that brought these reports that are outside the Commissions mandate on how best to pursue the matters complained against.

He adds that of the 1,645 cases received in 2015, 482 reports contained elements of corruption as compared to 577 in 2014.

Mr. Moono states that out of the 482 reports, 253 were authorized for investigations as compared to 469 in 2014.

He says 204 reports did not have sufficient details of the corruption offence to warrant investigations to be conducted.

Mr. Moono states that by the close of the year, there were a total of 1,107 cases under investigation.

He further states that the Commission recorded 31 arrests country-wide and together with already existing cases, 64 prosecution cases were before the courts of law.

Mr. Moono says Commission secured 16 convictions as compared to 10 convictions recorded in 2014,with 3 acquittals recorded.
