FODEP urges Lungu to deal with hate speech peddlers

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) has urged President Edgar Lungu to take action against ministers and party officials who peddle tribal hate speech in order to preserve the country’s unity and democracy.

FODEP Executive Director MacDonald Chipenzi in a statement says recent remarks by Chief Government Spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili on national television have the potential to negate President Edgar Lungu’s call for unity, co-existence and love in the country.

He says the remarks against the people southern province further undermine the national motto of one Zambia One Nation which the President has vehemently preached since he assumed office.

Mr. Chipenzi states that President Lungu should therefore clarify whether Mr. Kambwili’s views on the people of Southern province is a collectively held view of his government.

He says it is disheartening to see how government leaders who are supposed to preach love and respect towards each other are in the forefront promulgating hate speech and tribal ridicule.

Mr. Chipenzi adds that FODEP in this vein, expects law enforcement agencies to invoke Article 23 of the Constitution and section 70 (1) of the Penal Code Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia on Mr. Kambwili instead of waiting to be petitioned.
