Govt advised to cancel contract for maize export to Zimbabwe

Government has been advised to consider cancelling the running contract for maize export to Zimbabwe in view of the current dry spells being experienced in most parts of the country.

UPND Chairman for Rural Reconstruction and Development Moono Mapani says the inadequate rainfall the country is experiencing may result in serious hunger thus the need for government to ensure that the current maize stocks are not exported to guarantee national food security.

Mr. Mapani, who is a Lawyer by profession, has explained to QFM News that every contract can be revisited and thus the need for government to engage the Zimbabwean Government and agree to terminate the contract.

He says there is no doubt that crop production for this farming season
will be low due to inadequate rainfall and discrepancies in the
management the Farmers Input Support Programme (FISP).

Mr. Mapani adds that most farmers have not even received the E-Voucher cards.

He further states that farming inputs are also expensive for most farmers to
afford.

Mr. Mapani says this therefore calls for government to think twice over the importation of maize considering that the projection for crop production for 2016 will be low.
