AVAP urges reduction in rejection of ballot papers during elections

Anti-Voter Apathy Project(AVAP)Executive Director Richwell Mulwani has called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and political parties to help reduce the high number of rejected ballots during elections.

He says the rejected ballots tend to undermine the will of people during elections.

Mr. Mulwani says the ECZ, political parties and other stakeholders have a duty to ensure that the number of rejected ballots is reduced.

He has also noted the need for stakeholders and political parties to educate voters on the possibility of having a re-run in this year’s presidential election in the event no candidates gets more than 50 percent of the votes.

Statistics show that there were 17,313 rejected ballots out of the 5,166,084 votes cast in the January 20th Presidential by-election.
