The National Association for Small and Medium Contractors says the year ending 2015 has been a challenging year for contractors in the country due to the depreciation of the kwacha against major currencies.

Association President Mutale Mpepo says this is because the materials used by contractors are mostly imported from other countries.

Mr. Mpepo says another challenge his association members faced in the ending year is lack of financing and equipment.

He says the lending conditions of most banks were not favorable to the local small and medium contractors.

Mr. Mpepo has however praised government for awarding contracts to local contractors this year.

He says this is an indication that government heard the cry of the contractors.

Mr. Mpepo says there is need to change the mindset of awarding contracts to foreign contractors at the expense of the local contractors.
