No uniforms for teachers – Govt

Government has dismissed reports suggesting that it has introduced a policy to compel teachers to wear uniforms.

Addressing journalists in Lusaka today, Ministry of General Education Spokesperson, Hilary Chipango says these social media reports have resulted in agitation and anxiety among teachers in the country.

Mr. Chipango says the ministry is concerned with these social media reports that have not been confirmed by either the Teaching Service Commission or the ministry of general education.

He states that such reports are merely meant to bring discontent in the teaching fraternity.

Mr Chipango says there is no such policy in the ministry, adding that each time the ministry is coming up with policies they consult widely with stakeholders including teachers.

He has also advised the teacher unions to verify facts with relevant institutions before issuing statements on certain issues.

Speaking at the same briefing, Teaching Service Commission Secretary, Sandra Ndhlovu has refuted claims that the commission held a meeting on 8th and 11th November to discuss the introduction of uniforms for teachers.

Ms Ndhlovu says although dress code is part of the code of conduct for teachers, no uniforms were mentioned during the same meeting.

She has since advised teachers across the country to desist from holding meetings to discuss the issue saying the story is a fabricated one.
