HRC concerned POA has continued to be a source of conflict

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) is concerned that the application of the Public Order Act has continued to be a source of conflict and violence in the country.

Commission Chief Information, Education and Training Officer, Mweelwa Muleya says there is need for the political parties and Police to adhere to the provisions of the Public Order Act.

Mr. Muleya notes that the Act has been a source of conflict because some stakeholders feel stifled in the manner this law is administered by Police.

He says the commission has been receiving complaints from various stakeholders that the Act is applied in a discriminatory manner.

Mr. Muleya adds that the commission is engaging political parties, the Police and the government at large to see how best this piece of legislation can be applied without injuring people’s feelings.

Mr. Muleya has advised political players to always ensure that they adhere to the provisions of the Public Order Act to avoid any possible commotion with the police.
