Opposition United Liberal Party (ULP) President Sakwiba Sikota says it is logically not possible for the country hold early elections in 2016.

Mr. Sikota has since described the idea of having early elections as mere excitement over something that is likely not to happen.

he says the programme the Electoral Commission of Zambia has embarked on of updating the voters register attest to the fact that it is logically not possible to have early elections.

Mr. Sikota who is also a renowned constitutional lawyer does not think that the Country can have early elections with an electoral roll that has not been verified and finalized.

He says the voters’ register must be published first after being verified before a general election is held.

Mr. Sikota has told QFM News in a telephone interview that this is why he thinks that people entertaining the idea of early elections are only being over excited without thinking things through.

And MMD President Nevers Mumba has questioned also questioned the feasibility of holding early elections by the discretion of President Edgar Lungu when a new constitution upon which the 2016 general elections are expected to be held will provide for a specific date for holding elections in the Country.

Dr. Mumba says his party anticipates that if the Constitution Bills before Parliament go through and become law, Zambia will hold its general elections in August 2016.

Dr. Mumba has told Qfm News in a separate interview that the MMD does not therefore see why the issue of having general election early or not should be a concern.

He states that the concern of the former ruling party is whether the ruling PF is able to change anything in the draft constitution to suit its interests.
