The Airways Allied Workers Union of Zambia (AWUZ) has welcomed the decision by government to defer establishment of a national airline.

Union General Secretary Neddy Banda says the union is happy that the establishment of a national airline has not been abandoned altogether.

Mr Banda says while the AWUZ understands the importance of establishing the national airline, it believes it is prudent for the government to defer the establishment of the airline in view of the current economic challenges.

He states that his union understands that establishing an airline is an expensive venture which cannot be cannot be done under the current economic environment.

Mr. Banda has since urged government not to abandon the idea of establishing a national airline taking into consideration the benefits that it will bring to the country.

And Mr Banda says the awarding of the 20% salary increment to its members by the Zambia Airports Cooperation will go a long way in mitigating the challenges they are facing.

He has since described the 20% salary increment as a milestone.
