DMMU distributes 16,087.65 tons of relief to 8 provinces

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has distributed a total of 16,087.65 metric tons of maize has so far in eight provinces under the 2015/2016 relief food programme.

Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka this afternoon, DMMU National Coordinator Patrick Kangwa says distribution is currently taking place in all the affected districts and in the districts that were under monitoring but have been recommended for intervention by the district disaster management committees.

Mr. Kangwa notes that in order to ensure the smooth running of the programme, measures have been put in place which include continuous monitoring of the distribution exercise in order to avoid the stalling of the programme and reviewing of the internal transportation, storage and handling rate.

He adds that the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has reserved enough maize to cover for the requirements of the current relief food programme, adding that the Zambia Air Force has also been put on standby for intervention in any areas that may be impassable.

Meanwhile Herocean Enterprises Zambia limited has donated 200 pre painted corrugated iron sheet pieces of 3.5 meters to the households that were affected by the rainstorm in Bauleni Township on 22nd November, 2015.

And receiving the donation, Mr. Kangwa says making Zambia safer require strong disaster preparedness measures to be put in place.

Bauleni Township indicates that the number of affected households was six hundred and nine with 399 having their roofs blown off.
And Herocean Enterprises Public relations officer Sandra Kalaba says they believe that it is the responsibility of the private companies to supplement government efforts to make Zambia a comfortable place for all.
