Luangwa bridge insects not harmful – Kasonde

DR KASONDE-JOSEPHHEALTH Minister Dr. Joseph Kasonde says test results received from the Veterinary Department indicate that the insects which are biting people between the Kacholola and Luangwa Bridge area do not carry any disease causing organisms that could transmit either to animals or humans any particular disease.

Updating Parliament on the reported presence of the insects suspected to pose a danger to both human and animal life, following a question raised by Chipata Central Member of Parliament Mtolo Phiri, Dr Kasonde says insects have been prevalent in the areas for more than ten years and that there is no record that they cause any disease to humans apart from the irritation they cause on the bite site.

He says the increase in the number of bites and the insect population observed this year which could be attributed to climate change or the road construction in the area which has disturbed their habitat in the soil due to excavation and movement of soils coupled with the noise vibrations from the construction equipment.

Dr Kasonde however notes that in the past month there have been no reported cases of bites or site of the insects along the road.
