Mukuka bemoans underutilization of construction industry

Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) Secretary General Cosmas Mukuka has bemoaned underutilization and lack of organization in the Country’s construction industry.

Mr. Mukuka has observed that the construction sector potential in the country can be diversified and used to develop skills that can be exported if it is well utilized.

He says his union has also taken note that the Zambian real estate developers are importing plumbers from Malawi and carpenters from Zimbabwe to carryout works in the construction industry.

He says this is because construction workers in Malawi are organized in corporations and associations unlike in Zambia.

Mr. Mukuka was speaking when members of the steering committee on the Green Jobs Programme paid a courtesy call on North-Western Province Minister Dawson Kafwaya in Solwezi.

And Finland Ambassador to Zambia Timo Olkkonen, who was part of the steering committee, has said that the Finnish government has provided 11 million euros for the implementation of the Green Jobs programme.

He says the Green Jobs project is important because it combines the creation of employment and improvement of livelihoods which are important issues to the government of Finland.
