IRF hails Zambian govt over road safety efforts

The International Road Federation (IRF) has hailed the Zambian Government for its efforts towards the implementation of the United Nations (UN) Decade of Action on Road Safety.

IRF Chairman and President Kiran Kapila, has taken note that the Zambian Government through the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has adopted road safety as governance issue.

He says the Zambian government is therefore key in achieving the UN Decade of Action on Road Safety whose aspiration are to stabilize and reduce road traffic fatalities by fifty per cent by the year 2020.

Mr. Kapila thinks that Zambia has also demonstrated strong political will by embarking on various infrastructure development projects aimed at constructing safer road, increased interventions for safer road users, safer vehicle and improved post-crash care among others.

He has observed that the establishment of a lead agency to promote road safety in Zambia is a further clear demonstration of the government’s political drive to reduce the numbers of road traffic crashes and fatalities in the country.

Mr. Kapila was speaking during the IRF and CHTS 2015 China Congress and Annual Meeting in China on yesterday Saturday the 26th of September.

And RTSA Chief Executive Officer Zindaba Soko disclosed that Zambian government is developing strategies to stabilize and reduce fatalities arising from crashes by the year 2020.

Mr. Soko says RTSA is also determined to reduce road traffic fatalities in Zambia through a multi-sectoral approach.

This is contained in a statement made available to Qfm News by RTSA Information Officer Fredrick Mubanga.
