ZCTU urges probe to ascertain exact mines’ job losses

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says it is becoming very difficult to know who is telling the truth between the government and mining companies over the exact number of job losses expected in the sector.

ZCTU Secretary General Cosmas Mukuka says the labour movement however thinks such contradictions or fluctuations in the numbers of jobs expected to be lost are expected if businesses in the Mining sector continue operating under a veil of secrecy.

Mr. Mukuka says what therefore needs to be done is instituting an investigation to ascertain who is telling the truth or not among the government, the Mine owners and the Unions.

Mr. Mukuka has also encouraged government to consider tightening laws with respect investments in mine operations in the country with view of reversing the current situation where Mines appear to be controlling government by manipulating the law.

He was speaking in Lusaka today during a media briefing to react to President Edgar Lungu’s speech during the opening of the 5th session of the 11th National Assembly.
