Voting closes in Lubansenshi, Solwezi West

Voting in the tightly contested Solwezi West parliamentary by-election has closed characterized by a low vote turn out.

While the voter turnout in morning looked promising with queues forming at some polling stations, the situation changed starting midday as most polling stations visited were deserted.

Meanwhile, Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) Vice President Martin Mbewe has called on political parties to educate their members on the electoral system.

Mr. Mbewe says his organization, as one of the election observers, is concerned that some party cadres wanted to bring confusion during voting because they do not understand the electoral system.

Mr. Mbewe has told QFM’s Albert Mpezeni in Solwezi that it is unfortunate that one suspected PF member almost caused confusion at Kambazhi polling station afer insisting that two PF polling agents should be inside the poling room alleging that UPND officials planned to steal votes.

He says such events arises as a result of some cadres not understanding what they are supposed to do when they are appointed by their parties as polling agents.

Mr. Mbewe is however impressed that voting in Solwezi West went on peacefully despite recording few pockets of violence during campaigns.
