ZCF acknowledges failure to make notable economic contribution

The Zambia Cooperative Federation (ZCF) says the cooperative movement’s failure to make a notable contribution to the country’s economy is as a result of lack of commitment by the members to do so.

President Edgar Lungu during his address to the National Assembly last Friday expressed concern that the cooperative movement is in a state where it is struggling to make any notable contribution to the country’s economy.

ZCF Director General James Chirwa says there is need to change the mindset of the members so that they begin to think business and self reliance.

Mr Chirwa notes that the idea of cooperative members always relying on handouts from the government is what has crippled the development of cooperatives in the country.

He says this should be done away with if the cooperative movement is to regain its original position.

Mr. Chirwa states the organization has since begun mobilizing itself in readiness to be a business vehicle that will spur economic growth.
