Govt,CEC ink deal for Kabompo power project

Government and the Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) have signed the Implementation Agreement for the 40 MegaWatts Kabompo Gorge Hydroelectric Project in North-Western Province.

The signing of the Implementation Agreement will enable CEC complete the remaining pre-implementation activities that include the mobilization of financial resources for the construction of the project whose cost is in excess of US$220 million.

Speaking during the signing ceremony in Lusaka this morning, Mines, Energy and Water Development Permanent Secretary Brigadier General Emelda Chola said her Ministry will closely monitor the implementation of the project to ensure timely commissioning of the project.

General Chola is optimistic that once completed, the project will provide a sustainable source of electricity and stimulate socio-economic development through job creation during and after construction.

Speaking earlier at the same signing ceremony, CEC and Kabompo Hydro Power Limited board Chairman, Hanson Sindowe disclosed that his company has already spent in excess of US$32 million on the project.

Mr. Sindowe says money has been spent on early works on the project which included the construction of the diversion tunnel.
