The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has observed the need for government to ensure that when signing investment contracts with mining owners it protect workers’ rights.

ZCTU Secretary General Cosmas Mukuka says government should put up some caution measures when signing contracts with mining owners in a bid to protect workers.

Mr. Mukuka says it is unfortunate that the mining owners are dictating the terms of operations rather than government controlling them accordingly.

Mr. Mukuka has observed the need to come up with legislation that will compel mining owners to respect workers’ rights even as they make huge profits from the country’s mining industry.

He says there is also need for government to invest in mining production so that there is competition with the private sector, a move which he says might help in safeguarding the plight of miners.
