The Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PROTUZ) has called on the government to clearly state how it intends to deal with the challenges teachers are facing ahead of the commemoration of the Teachers’ Day next month.

PROTUZ Deputy Secretary General Charity Kampamba says for a long time now, the teacher union has been calling on government to address the issue of lack of accommodation for teachers especially in rural areas.

Ms Kampamba says this is therefore an opportunity for government to state what practical measures it has put in place to deal with the current challenges facing teachers.

She states that teachers more especially in rural areas are faced with a critical shortage of accommodation which needs to be addressed.

Ms Kampamba notes that government has built more schools compared to teachers’ houses making it difficult for them to be accommodated within the school premises.
