Take lead in promoting sanitation issues, Mukobela encourages fellow chiefs

Chief Mukobela of the Ila speaking people in Namwala District has encouraged his fellow traditional leaders to take a leading role in promoting sanitation issues in the country.

Chief Mukobela says it is saddening that 51 years after independence sanitation issues are still a challenge to the nation.

He says it is incumbent upon the traditional leadership to ensure that their subjects uphold good sanitation in order to prevent certain diseases that mainly affect children.

And Chief Mukobela says he has managed to maintain his chiefdom’s Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by working with all people in his chiefdom and ensuring that each household has a toilet.

The Traditional Leader says having attained the ODF status in 2013 after the Community Led Total Sanitation Programme (CLTS) was introduced in 2012 in his chiefdom, he is glad that all his subjects are supporting him in promoting good sanitation.

He has told QFM News via telephone that in order to maintain the ODF status, he holds chiefdom council meetings where he emphasizes the importance of adequate sanitation and the inevitable role that each of his subjects has to play.
