Govt should have passed cost of imported power to Mines – Sikota

The opposition United Liberal Party (ULP) has observed that it would have made economic sense if government excluded the use of imported power to the mines alone.

The ULP is of the view that apart from utilizing more electricity, mines have a huge economic muscle than domestic power users.

Sakwiba Sikota

ULP president Sakwiba Sikota says this is what his party would have done to pass on the cost of imported power to mines and allow domestic users rely on the locally generated power.

Mr. Sikota has told Qfm News by telephone that much as it is expensive for Zambia to import power from the ships via the coasts of Mozambique, it is r better than not having power at all.

He says his party is therefore happy that government has started to import electricity via the coasts of Mozambique as a short term measure.

Mr. Sikota states that the long term is on the other hand what needs to be dealt with.

He has suggested that Zambia considers venturing in other sources of energy such Thermal power, Solar and wind energy.
