17 killed in Mumbwa-Mwembeshi junction traffic accident

Seventeen people died on the spot while two others are nursing injuries after getting involved in a traffic accident at Mumbwa-Mwembeshi junction this morning.

The accident that happened around 07:50hrs and claimed the lives of 13 males, 3 females and a baby girl, involved a Benz Truck Reg. No. AAH 7373 and Toyota Hiace Minibus Reg. No. ALH 5968.

Police spokesperson Charity Munganga-Chanda has confirmed the tragedy to Qfm News in a statement saying the driver of the minibus is among the dead while the driver of Benz truck has ran away.

Ms. Chanda has explained the accident happened after the driver of a Benz Truck cut in front of the Toyota Hiace minibus which had 19 passengers on board as he was trying to turn.

She notes that the minibus was coming from Mumbwa to Lusaka.

Ms. Chanda says the bodies of the deceased are lying in the UTH mortuary awaiting postmortem while the injured are being treated in the same hospital.

He says a manhunt has since been launched for the driver of the Benz Truck.
