Nkana have allayed fears that they will be affected by their principle sponsors Mopani Copper Mines PLC scaling down operations in Zambia.

Mopani’s parent company the mining and metal retail giant, Glencore, has announced that it is scaling down its Zambia and DR Congo operations due to the low Copper prices.

The 12-time Zambian champions owe their recent revival to the deep pockets of Mopani following the Kitwe clubs return to the FAZ Super League in 2010 following two relegation spells in 2004 and 2008.

“There is nothing like that, the team will not suffer,” insisted Nkana chairperson Evaristo Kabila in an interview with The Post newspaper.

“Of course there are these problems of the drop in Copper prices, electricity issues and the World economy, and companies are putting in place measures to mitigate the situation but that does not mean Nkana is a casualty, everything is intact.

“We have not been told anything that is disturbing to the team.”

Nkana won an unprecedented 12th league title in 2013 and last season made their group stage debut in Caf club competition when they took part in the 2014 Confederation Cup.

The Kitwe giants are currently in ninth position on 31 points, 21 behind leaders Zesco United with seven games left to play.
