Child marriage deprives basic rights to girl child, observes Kanyama

Siavonga District Commissioner Lovemore Kanyama says child marriage deprives the girl child of her basic rights to health, education and a chance to prosper.

Mr Kanyama adds that child marriage also holds back families and communities at large.

He states that while progress has been made in addressing the issue of child marriage in Siavonga district, much more needs to be done.

Mr Kanyama adds that child marriage is a gross human right violation that puts young girls at risk and condemns them to perpetual poverty.

The Siavonga district Commissioner has since commended traditional leaders in the area for taking a leading role in the fight against child marriages.

He has emphasized that early marriages are detrimental to children’s basic rights, particularly the girl child, hence the urgent need to fight the vice.

Mr. Kanyama further adds that Children who marry early are often deprived of their basic rights to health, education, development and equality.
