The Kenya versus Equatorial Guinea friendly match has been called off just hours to the clash that had been scheduled for Tuesday at Nyayo National Stadium.

An official at the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) who asked not to be named confirmed the development, saying the West Africans had a problem with traveling to Nairobi for the match after playing South Sudan in a 2017 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier.

“They will not be coming at all so that is to mean the friendly match is not on; they had a problem with their flight to Nairobi and thus the friendly match is canceled,” he said.

Harambee Stars deputy coach Musa Otieno confirmed as much, though he stated that the call from the federation confirming the cancellation did not offer a reason as to why. He termed it a disappointing turn of events since the team was looking to gain much from it.

“Early this morning we were called by federation officials informing us that the friendly has been canceled but they did not give us a reason. It is disappointing because we had made plans for the game and the same would have been very important to the team’s development,” he noted.

While Kenya lost 1 – 2 at home to Zambia in the 2017 Afcon qualifiers, Equatorial Guinea were beaten 1 – 0 by minnows South Sudan.
