Private Sector Development Association (PSDA) Chairperson Yusuf Dodia has observed that hydropower is still the best option despite the current electricity shortage the country is facing.

In an interview with Q FM, Mr. Dodia says that the only reason the country is facing electricity shortage is because it had not invested in such power for over a period of 40 years despite the country’s population and manufacturing sector and other commercial consumers increasing.

He says Zambia is currently consuming 2000mega watts of power while a feasibility study undertaken by institutions like Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) indicates that about 6000 megawatts can be produced.

He says that many of the proposed alternative sources of electricity are not as sustainable as hydro-electric power.

Mr. Dodia predicts that power shortages will continue for some time because the establishment of hydro-power stations requires longer periods to be developed.
