Some people in Shiwang’andu District in Muchinga Province have called on the government to help them get about K300, 000 as compensation from the Chinese Construction Company working on the Matumbo – Chama road.

About 25 families have complained to QFM News that their houses and other buildings were destroyed and some developed big cracks during the construction of the 84km Matumbo – Chama stretch and that they have not been compensated as agreed.

They have explained that when the surveyor was surveying where the road will pass, they were promised that they will be compensated in no time because of the damage their equipment would leave on their buildings but that it is over a year nothing ha happened.

Denny Simwawa, a representative, says since last year the people have been trying to seek help from relevant authorities but nothing has been done to help them.

Mr. Simwawa says they even went to the High Court in Kasama but they were told to go back to the Shiwang’andu District Commissioner who has done nothing to help them.

He explains that they signed all the necessary documents in 2014 for them to be compensated over the loss of their houses and other buildings but that nothing positive is coming out.

He has accused Alfred Kambikambi, who is the Consultant’s Accountant to the Chinese construction company, of even insulting them when they demand for their money.

Mr. Simwawa says the people are bitter and this is the more reason they want government to intervene in the matter or else they risk loosing votes during next year’s general elections.

And Bernadette Musonda says two of her houses were erased and each time she demands for her money she is always turned away by Mr. Kambikambi like a dog.

She says she is an old woman and has no resources to build new houses and that is why she is calling on the higher authority to intervene and help them poor people in Shiwang’andu.
