ZLA urges end to politicizing land

The Zambia Land Alliance (ZLA) has called for a stop to the continued sharing of land by political cadres in the country.

Zambia Land Alliance Board Chairman Eugene Kabilika says there is need to stop Political interference from Land allocation.

Mr. Kabilika says the only hope is to implement the Land policy that will ensure that 30 per cent of land is exclusively given to women because despite it being in place, it had not been implemented.

Speaking during the electoral institute for sustainable democracy in Africa (ELSA) Policy brief on Land issues, Mr. Kabilika says the current debates is aggravated by a legacy of centuries of disrupted land ownership and usage patterns.

Mr. Kabilika says the high rate of politicization of land allocation has caused cadres from illegally allocating land because they have come untouchable.

And ELSA Programs officer Lisa Van Dongen has observed that Land is the most important asset someone could have saying that it is essence of life.

Mrs. Dongen says land conflicts in Africa are becoming problematic especially in countries with a scarcity of arable land.

She says the increasing pressure on land is due to population growth and environmental and challenges associated with decreasing levels of land productivity.
