NAREP questions govt’s seriousness

Former President Rupiah Banda’s son Andrew Banda has predicted that there will be little maize on the market for the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to buy.

Mr. Banda notes that farmers were desperate as early as April to sale their maize only for the Food Reserve Agency to announce the floor prices almost in September.

He says farmers had no option but sell their maize to briefcase businessmen in order to survive.

Mr. Banda states that the country should not expect any bumper harvest this year not because of poor weather, but because of the mismanagement of the agriculture sector.

He further states that the agriculture sector is in a mess which needs to be sorted out urgently considering that many people survive on farming.
