NAC optimistic of Zambia winning HIV battle by 2020

HIV testThe National AIDS Council (NAC) says Zambia is poised to win the fight against HIV and AIDS by 2020.

NAC Program Manager Dr. Harold Witola says the optimism to win the HIV and AIDS battle is evidence based.

Dr. Witola says Zambia is committed to continue developing high impact interventions using a combination of HIV preventions strategies to effectively respond to the epidemic.

He says children and young people should be the first to benefit from efforts the country is making in ending the epidemic.

Dr. Witola states that HIV still remains an urgent problem with 430,000 new infections per year among people aged 15-24.

He adds that there is need for the Zambian government to renew, accelerate and improve the implementation of the commitment they made during the 2013 meeting of Ministers of Education, Health and Community Development during which they committed themselves to working towards a vision relating to human rights, HIV and AIDS, sexual and reproductive health among others.

Dr Witola was speaking during a media Orientation workshop on the commitment for East and Southern Africa African region on comprehensive sexuality education.

And United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) National Program Officer Remy Mukonka has observed that new HIV infections among adolescents are not declining as quick as among other age groups.

Mr. Mukonka has noted that there are heterogeneous groups characterized by varied challenges raging from teenage pregnancies, unemployment, poor educational achievements among other things.

He has since commended government for the new curriculum which has a strong emphasis on skills development through the technical and vocational path way and provides more options for young people.
