RTSA records 188 accidents in last two months

The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) says it recorded 188 road traffic accidents through its National Call Centre in last two months in which 33 people died.

RTSA Public Relations Officer Fredrick Mubanga in a statement says 92 people were injured in the accidents with 61 vehicles damaged.

Mr Mubanga says the agency is deeply concerned by the high number of road accidents on Zambian roads.

Mr Mubanga says preliminary accident examinations and investigations have revealed that most of the road accidents recorded in June and July where mainly human error related, over speeding, dangerous driving, careless driving and misjudgment by drivers when overtaking among other factors.

He adds that preliminary accident examinations and investigation have also revealed that the other elements that contributed to these accidents are factors such as tyre bursts in most cases.

Mr Mubanga says the RTSA notes that the current state of affairs is retrogressive in the country’s bid to achieve the UN Decade of Action on Road Safety of reducing road traffic accidents by 50 percent by 2020.

He has since called on all Zambians to adopt a culture of observing road traffic regulations if the country is to record a reduction in the number of road accidents.
