Thornton counsels Zambia on its potentials

Outgoing British High Commissioner to Zambia James Thornton has observed that Zambia’s enormous potential can be realized if there is a clearer long-term strategy for national growth.

In a statement issued to QFM News today, on the eve of his tour of duty to Zambia, Mr Thornton states that Zambia’s potential can further be realized if there is a willingness on the part of individuals and the nation to invest for the future even if that means consuming a little less now.

Mr Thornton notes that Zambia needs to remain a united country, and the many poor need to be able to benefit from economic growth.

He adds that having witnessed Zambia’s democratic tradition further reinforced through the expert conduct of the Presidential by-election this year by the ECZ, the country will soon be able to claim to be one of the strongest democracies in Africa, for as long as there is appropriate protection of the freedoms of speech and assembly.

And Mr. Thornton has since described the three and a half years that he has been in Zambia as the best of his professional career.

He says during his time as High Commissioner the UK’s relations with Zambia have been further strengthened, including through three visits by members of the Royal Family.

He adds that the commercial and prosperity work of the High Commission has been reinforced, while the British Chamber of Commerce in Zambia has been set up.

Mr Thornton also notes the substantial increase in the number of scholarships available to Zambians.

He states that though he is leaving, he will continue to take a close interest in Zambia’s development.
