Outdated register behind voter apathy – FODEP

The voter apathy that has continued to characterize elections in Zambia has been attributed to the outdated voter register.

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) has observed that for the fact that the current voter register was recorded in 2011 it is possible that its figures are not the actual number of voters in the country.

Executive Director MacDonald Chipenzi says his organization has also taken note that the other factor that has contributed to voter apathy in the country is the poor publicity and voter education activities during elections.

Mr. Chipenzi has advised that in order to reverse this is situation government should consider funding the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to implement the law which requires it to do continuous voter registration.

He says Zambia can also learn from Ethiopia where voter registration is done at the time an election is taking place.
