LCC debt reaches K378 million

 

The Lusaka City Council has a staggering debt of over K378 million it owes various creditors.

This include money owed statutory bodies such as NAPSA which is owed K79.9 million,LASF which is owed K22.2 million and ZRA which is owed K64.5 million in form of PAYE and the Unions which are owed K54.7 million.

And the council has disclosed that it has managed to pay about 167 retirees their benefits out of the 453 retirees.

Lusaka Mayor George Nyendwa says a total of K16.9 million has been spent to pay retirees from January to June this year.

The Mayor says the outstanding balance owed to retirees now stands at K33.96 million.

Speaking when Local Service Commission Chairperson Christabel Kalulu paid a courtesy call on him at his office, Mr. Nyendwa says the council is committed to offsetting the debt it all the retirees.

And Mr. Nyendwa says the Lusaka City Council has made strides in ensuring that the decentralization policy is effected without further delay.

And Local Government Service Commissioner Chairperson Christabel Kalulu has commended the Lusaka city council for honoring its promise to pay some if its retirees their benefits.

Ms Kalulu has also disclosed that the commission will not renew contracts of those who have reached the retirement age.

Ms. Kalulu says it is time for young people to take up positions in the local government system.

And Ms Kalulu says the commission is committed to ensuring that it implements the decentralization policy because this will enable citizens to take part in government making processes at the local level.
