ONE Direction‘s surprise new single Drag Me Down has topped the charts in a whopping 82 countries on the first day of its release.

Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan celebrated their biggest global success just hours after Zayn Malik signed a new solo record deal.

Despite the huge reaction, the boys overlooked the use of any Twitter countdowns and teaser clips.

Instead, they simply dropped the new single, Drag Me Down, on iTunes at 6.30am without any warning.

As if it wasn’t enough to be able to hear it now, it can also be downloaded instantly – and that’s exactly what fans have been doing.

Despite absolutely no promotion, the song reached number one in the iTunes charts in less than an hour.

Liam Payne was the first to tweet about the single writing: “Bit of a surprise! Check out our new single!

“It’s called Drag Me Down & I hope you love it as much as we do.”

Louis Tomlinson added: “Thank you for all your constant support. Hopefully you love it, we’re proud of it :)”

Niall Horan added: “Finally we get to say this ! have waited a long time but our new single Drag Me Down is out!”
