The National Assembly of Zambia has officially launched its 2015 -2019 strategy plan with greater emphasis placed on improving capacities of its legislative functions.
The strategy plan which has retained the National Assembly’s vision of being a model legislature for Democracy and Good Governance has eight strategic objectives.
Speaking during the official launch of the Strategic plan this morning, Speaker of the Nation
al Assembly Patrick Matibini said the 8 strategic objectives are however divided into subdivisions of Strategic objectives of the Members of Parliament (MPs) and those of the administration of Parliament.
Dr Matibini says the strategic objectives for MPs are meant to strengthen the capacity of the House to effectively perform its legislative functions, strengthen its capacity to provide effective oversight on the Executive arm of government and build its capacity to participate in the National Budget Cycle.
He says the other strategic objectives for MPs are to enhance the representation functions of the National Assembly and improve its organization and management of the procedures and functions.
The Speaker also listed strengthen support for the National Assembly to discharge its functions, improving administrative service delivery and develop infrastructure to enable MPs and staff to perform more effectively as the three strategies under the subdivision strategic objectives for the administration of Parliament.
He since expressed confidence that with these objectives, the 2015-2019 strategic plan, which he says has been formulated with extensive consultations, will spur the MPs to perform their best and contribute to proper functioning of the Zambian Parliament.
Justice Matibini has also cooperating partners that include the Swedish government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the support rendered towards various processes leading to the development of the strategic plan.
