ZCEA demands that juvenile detention be last resort to punishing children

The Zambia Civic Education Association (ZCEA) has demanded that the juvenile justice detention system be the last resort in punishing children.

ZCEA Executive Director Judith Mulenga says there is need for government to establish child friendly detention centers and reformatories to promote child rights in the country.

Ms. Mulenga says in this regard having one reformatory centre for girls and one for boys will be the best way to go than putting them in the same centre.

She states that it is also important for government consider having children be tried in children’s courts regardless of the offences that they have alleged to have done.

Ms. Mulenga points out that Zambia can do better only if serious children’s rights are well considered and implemented to the latter.
