President Lungu’s go ahead directive of Chuundu meeting worry Grand Coalition

The Grand Coalition on the Campaign for a People Driven Constitution is dismayed by reports indicating that President Edgar Lungu has given the go ahead to the Chuundu meeting of the Tonga speaking people planned for tomorrow Saturday in Monze.

Coalition Chairperson Fr Leonard Chiti in a statement to QFM News today says they find it worrying that the President thinks he has power to allow or disallow Zambians from exercising their human rights, such as freedom of association and assembly, which are guaranteed by the constitution.

Fr Chiti has reminded President Lungu that the presidency does not confer human rights instead, him and his government has a duty and obligation to uphold the constitution by respecting those rights, and refraining from undue interference in citizens’ enjoyment of their human rights which are clearly provided in the constitution.

He states that the fact that the President stated publicly that he gave the go-ahead for the meeting leaves his organisation without any doubt that he is the one who instructs the Police to use the Public Order Act to silence dissenting voices.

Fr Chiti adds that the sower of the divisive sentiments which President Lungu intends to bring to an end once he meets Chiefs from Southern province on Tuesday is no other than PF Secretary General Davies Chama, and not the conveners of the Chuundu that is due to take place tomorrow in Monze.

Fr Chiti states that it was Mr Chama who made unpalatable tribalistic remarks on 20th June 2015.

He has since called on all well meaning Zambians, of any tribe, who genuinely abhor tribalism to travel to Monze and give solidarity to the Chuundu as a demonstration of taking a stand against such divisive tendencies being exhibited by the ruling party leadership.
