High cost of living is depriving Zambians social protection -JCTR

The Jesuit Center for Theological Reflection (JCTR) has observed that the high cost of living in Zambia has now reached the extent of depriving citizens their right to social protection.

The JCTR has taken note that people in the country are being denied their economic, social and cultural right because the cost of essential commodities is going up.

JCTR Media and Information officer Mwiinga Shimilimo says the JCTR’s latest Basic Needs Basket has similarly revealed that non food items have in fact increased the cost of living by K33, 77 Ngwee.

Ms. Shimilimo has told Qfm News by telephone that this is coupled with an upward surge in terms of food items by K21, 43 Ngwee.

She says by the fact that this high cost of living in the country is being driven by the hike in the price of essential commodities such as fuel; the JCTR suggests the need for government to urgently respond and ensure that people’s right to social protection is restored.

Ms. Shimilimo notes that increasing the allocation to households being supported under the social cash transfer is one measure her organization urges government to take.
