Sundowns shoot down Zesco United

Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday afternoon picked up a second successive win on their five-day, pre-season training camp in Zambia.

Sundowns beat defending Faz Super League champions Zesco United 1-0 at their Levy Mwanawasa home ground in Ndola in the tourist’s penultimate pre-season friendly in Zambia.

The win was Sundowns second over Zesco in a friendly international this year after beating the Zambian champions 2-0 in Pretoria in January.

Sundowns’ only goal came just after the hour mark through Cuthbert Malajila.

Malajila blasted in the ball when he met a cross from Anthony Laffor in the 62nd minute while lurking on the penalty spot.

Zesco’s best chance in the match came in the 15th minute when Jonas Sakuwaha failed to beat Dennis Onyango in a one-on-one situation.

Sundowns win came 24 hours after they beat promoted Mufulira Wanderers by the same margin up the road at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

Coach Pitso Mosimane said it was gratifying to pick up two wins on the trot.

“Obviously for any team it is good to win. They are narrow wins but they all count as wins. I think the team is improving slowly,” Mosimane said.

“What is important is to the get the body in the right shape. What is also important is to make the new players fit into the system and there is no better way to do that than by winning.”

The Brazilians wrap-up their pre-season camp on Thursday when they face Nchanga Rangers at Levy Stadium after earlier opponents Forest Rangers opted out of the warm-up.
