Govt notes impact of good procurement practices on economy

Government says it realizes that good procurement practices can bring about positive results which can ultimately impact positively on the economy.

Speaking at the Zambia Public Procurement Authority (ZPPA) electronic government procurement system (E-GP) and open contracting workshop in Lusaka today, Acting Ministry of Finance Permanent Secretary for economic management and finance Kasonde Mwila says good procurement practices and prudent use of resources can lead to a better economy.

Mr. Mwila says because of the benefits that come with good procurement practices, government established the Zambia Public Procurement Authority to perform an oversight function in public procurement.

He notes that the introduction of the e-GP system will help address the challenges faced using the manual system such as the long chain of internal authorization and scrutiny.

Mr. Mwila adds that the e-GP system once implemented will have several positive benefits such as the reduction of public procurement vulnerability to corruption and other vices.

He says the system will also act as a foundation for transparency through the provision of various procurement information regarding awarded contracts, procurement policies and laws among others.

Mr Mwila further states that the e- GP system will also enhance public procurement monitoring compliance to the public regulation.

And speaking earlier, ZPPA Director General Dr. Chibelushi Musongole says the e-GP system is a sure way through which quality service delivery to the citizens will be a reality.
